Members of the USM Alumni Association are entitled to complimentary access to the USM Library. To gain entry, they must present their valid membership card, either in physical or electronic form, to the staff on duty. This benefit exempts them from the Pay Per Visit fee.

Access is strictly limited to on-site use of library collections. Alumni members are not eligible for additional library services, such as borrowing, rental, etc.

USM Alumni who wish to utilize other library services must register for USM Library Alumni Membership, which requires payment of a prescribed fee.

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Library is an Academic Library. Membership only consists of staff and registered students. The USM library also offers LIMITED membership and library use for a fee to the surrounding community who want to using Library information resources for research, professional and career purposes. The Library Collection is a special collection and relevant to the study program at the University in accordance in supporting teaching and learning activities and University research and consultancy.

MEMBERSHIP 

Individuals who belong to the list below can be considered to be Library Public Members:  

1. Alumni of Universiti Sains Malaysia. 
2. Husband/Wife and children (aged 12 and above) permanent staff currently serving at USM. (Please attach Marriage/Birth Certificate/MyKad or relevant documents)
3. Government Officials and Statutory Bodies in the Professional/Management category. 
4. Business executives, entrepreneurs including them which is in the intermediate level and professionals such as doctors, teachers, lawyers and others. 
5. Bona fide researcher. 
6. Other applications that have special requirements will be examined by the Chief Librarian with the applicant's conditions can show evidence of the need for using Library resources.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE 

Application letter should be addressed to Chief Librarian by giving details personal together with documents: 

• Certificate from employer or Head Institution/Organization/Department of duty 
• Copy of USM Degree / Copy of Identity Card / Copy of Alumni Card 

Applicants are required to pay a fee service and registration after application to become a member is approved by Library. 

Payment of fees is on an annual basis and all payments must be made at the Department USM Treasurer during office hours or online via https://epayment.usm.my. 

Receipt of payment should be submitted to Library for processing purposes membership card.

LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP FEE

DAILY VISITORS (PAID) 

Open to individuals who wish to create reference in the library without being Public Member (Registered)
Fee: Individual – RM30/Per day 

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL 

• All annual fee payments are for period of one year. 
• Payment must be made at the Treasurer's Department USM or through ePayment. 
• A Library Reminder Notice will be sent every year to renew membership. 
• Membership will be canceled if The library does not receive a feedback member within one month after notice issued. 

LIBRARY FACILITIES FOR PUBLIC MEMBERS (REGISTERED)

Other services and facilities can be obtained with the permission of the Chief Librarian.

LOAN RENEWAL

Material loan renewal that has not passed the return date can be renewed for ONE time only through: 

1. Library website
2. Phone lines
3. Email

Loan renewals are not allowed if the borrowed material has booked by another member.

*The USM library reserves the right to request that borrowed materials be returned at any time even before the return date.

FINE FOR REPLACEMENT OF LOST/DAMAGED MATERIALS

• The fine for lost/damaged materials is TWO times the price of the material.
• Missing materials can be replaced with materials the same title or the latest version of the same title.
• Any loss of borrowed material must reported IMMEDIATELY to the Manager on duty at the Customer Service i-Counter or email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for further action.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

Any change of address shall notified IMMEDIATELY to the Library.

LIBRARY RULES 

• Registered members and Daily Visitors (Paid) only allowed to enter the Library 
• While in the Library Registered Members and Daily Visitors (Paid) are subject to Library Regulations. 
• Membership Card must be displayed while inside Library and is NOT transferable to anyone. 
• Registered members and Daily Visitors (Paid) shall well dressed and polite. mini skirt, shirtless sleeves & shorts are not allowed. 
• The mobile phone is always in SILENT mode when is in the library. 

PENALTY FOR LATE RETURN OF BOOKS 

RM0.50 cents per day (for Public Members (Registered only). 

MEMBERSHIP TERMINATION 

• Registered members who wish to terminate membership must return borrowed Library materials. 
• The library may terminate membership on at any time if a member is found to be breaking the rules Libraries and Universities.

Accessibility facilities

The Kelburn and Pipitea Libraries have rooms that are specially designed with accessibility in mind. If you require access to these rooms please contact Disability Services.

Kelburn Library access suite

The Access Suite at Kelburn is designed specifically for students with disabilities. The Access Suite has a rest space equipped with a bed and a reclining chair. The main room has study tables, a photocopier, ergonomic furniture and equipment, and student computing workstations. There is also a separate adaptive technology room.

Pipitea access suite

The Commerce Library has an access suite on the ground floor of Rutherford House, with computing workstations, adaptive technology and space for quiet study and rest.

Toilets

Accessible toilets are located in the Kelburn Library on levels 1, 2, 3 and 5; in the student common room adjacent to the Law Library; and on the ground floors of the Architecture and Design Campus (Vivian Street) and Commerce (Rutherford House).
